Mother’s Day is just around the corner—time to bust out cards, flowers, and breakfast-in-bed to let those special women know just how much they mean to us. We value their love, wisdom, and long-suffering patience. We’re also thankful if we inherited Mom’s eyes or smile. But that’s not all we have to thank Mom for.
It may not look good on a Hallmark card, but we should also be thankful for Mom’s mitochondrial DNA. (more…)

Human Disease
Every day I use an inhaler to control asthma symptoms. Since childhood I’ve struggled with asthma and although a cure does not yet exist, I can’t help yearning for a day when this weight will be lifted from my lungs.
Disease touches everyone. We battle chronic illnesses, like asthma or diabetes. We pray for triumph over cancer. Every flu season we wait hours in line, hoping there will be enough vaccine to go around. Sometimes we watch as loved ones fall under the shadow of Alzheimer’s. And sometimes we send gifts to help children orphaned by AIDS.
Why does God allow disease to wreak such havoc on us? Why did He even create the bacteria and viruses responsible for many diseases? (more…)

While in high school my husband, Darren, developed a talent for video production. He learned early on the various setbacks a video producer can experience while working on a project. One of the most frustrating occurred while taping something for his dad’s church. Halfway through, he discovered he had recorded over the only copy of a different video for the same church. (more…)

Last Sunday, my husband and I hosted a 14-hour Star Wars marathon for a small group of family and friends. We popped in Episode I: The Phantom Menace at 8 AM and ended Episode VI: Return of the Jedi at 10 PM. (Yes, I know we’re geeks.) (more…)
